Max-Prop FAQsMaintenance, Repairs, and Performance Tips

Discover answers to the most common questions about Max-Prop maintenance, performance, and troubleshooting. Learn how to maximise efficiency and prolong the life of your propeller.

General Maintenance

How often should I grease the propeller?

Greasing the Max-Prop once a year is ideal under most conditions. This can be done either with the boat on land or by a diver while it’s in the water. Regular greasing ensures a longer lifespan for your propeller. At a minimum, greasing should be performed every two years to maintain efficiency and reduce wear.

What grease should I use for the propeller?

We recommend using Lubriplate 130AA due to its proven performance in a wide range of water temperatures. Alternatively, Lewmar winch grease can be used, especially in warmer climates.

How long do the anodes last?

Anodes (zinc or aluminium) can last anywhere from two weeks to two years, depending on the galvanic activity on your boat and the surrounding water conditions. For new installations, check the anodes regularly to monitor their wear rate. To be safe, replace the anodes during every haul-out as a cost-effective way to protect your equipment.

Do I need a shaft zinc, or is the propeller zinc sufficient?

It’s always better to have additional zinc for protection. The Max-Prop three-blade has a built-in zinc anode, particularly useful in installations with limited space. If your propeller shaft is supported by a strut, adding a shaft zinc is strongly recommended.

Performance and Adjustments

How do I know if the pitch of my propeller is correct?

In optimal conditions—calm waters, a clean hull, and a well-maintained propeller—your engine should reach its maximum rated RPM.

  • If the engine exceeds its maximum RPM, the propeller pitch is too low, resulting in insufficient thrust.
  • If the engine cannot reach its maximum RPM, the pitch is too high, overloading the engine and potentially reducing its lifespan.

Adjust the blade angle during your next haul-out to correct these issues.

My engine isn’t reaching the maximum RPM. How much should I adjust the pitch?

To increase the maximum RPM, reduce the blade angle setting. A two-degree decrease in blade angle typically raises the RPM by approximately 13%. This adjustment ensures your engine operates efficiently and prolongs its lifespan.

What is the correct procedure to feather my Max-Prop?

Feathering depends on your transmission type:

  • Mechanical Transmission:
    1. Power at 2-3 knots in forward gear.
    2. Turn off the engine while keeping it in forward gear.
    3. If necessary, briefly engage reverse gear to help the propeller feather.
  • Hydraulic Transmission:
Follow the same steps as above. The remaining hydraulic pressure usually provides enough drag for feathering.
  • Electronically Controlled Transmission:
These systems may default to neutral, reducing drag and making feathering more challenging. For these, consider using a Max-Prop Boomerang, which uses spring-loaded blades for consistent feathering.

Installation and Repairs

Can the Max-Prop be serviced and repaired?

Yes, the Max-Prop can be repaired or reconditioned to address damage such as pitting, bent blades, or normal wear and tear. Contact us for a a reconditionning request.

Can the Max-Prop be installed or maintained in the water?

Yes, the Max-Prop Easy can be installed both in and out of the water. Routine maintenance tasks, such as greasing and replacing anodes, can be performed by a diver while the boat remains afloat, making it convenient for ongoing care.

Antifouling Solutions

Is there an antifouling product that works on the Max-Prop?

Several products can help reduce marine growth on your Max-Prop. One of the most effective options is Crystal Prop, which costs around 80€ per application. While no product is entirely foolproof, when applied correctly, it can last an entire season. However, frequent use of the propeller will cause antifouling coatings to wear off more quickly.

Common Questions

Do I have a right or left rotating propeller?

The Max-Prop can operate in either direction. Determine the rotation by viewing the shaft from the stern of the vessel:

  • Clockwise rotation = Right-hand propeller.
  • Counterclockwise rotation = Left-hand propeller.

What diameter propeller do I have?

For a two-blade propeller, measure the distance from the tip of one blade to the tip of the other. For three, four, or five blades, measure the radius (centre of the propeller to the tip of one blade) and double that measurement to find the diameter.

Can the Max-Prop drive a shaft alternator or regenerate an electric motor?

Yes, if you shut off the engine with the propeller in reverse, it will not feather, allowing the shaft to rotate. This rotation can drive a shaft alternator or be used to regenerate power for an electric motor.
